US Cement Shortage Heats Up Again

2005-07-13 00:00:00
At present, cement supply in 28 States in the United States is tight, especially in Texas, Florida and the South Atlantic region. Demand for cement in the United States has been rising since last year, mainly due to the boom in the U.S. residential construction industry, China's economic growth and reconstruction after last year's Indian Ocean tsunami and Florida hurricane disasters. According to China Cement Network, 130 million tons of cement were used in the United States last year, while only 100 million tons were produced in China. In some parts of the Rocky Mountains, cement supplies are extremely tight due to natural gas extraction, and cement use in Montana and Wyoming has increased by 80% since 2000. Homebuilders in Idaho in the north and Washington in the east have laid off construction workers because of delays in cement supplies.

At the same time, U.S. imports from cement-producing countries, especially Thailand, are becoming more difficult, mainly because cement prices are rising rapidly, up 7.5% from last year, and it is increasingly difficult for small builders to buy concrete.   Cement is a major component of concrete, and because of the tight supply of cement, pre-mixed concrete companies can only supply their major customers first. For small contractors and builders who only build patios, driveways, foundations, etc., it's a worry to keep working or stop and wait.

Although contractors have asked the Bush administration to ease import tariffs imposed on Mexican cement since 1990, the shortage of cement in the United States seems unlikely to be alleviated in the short term, in part because of the fact that countries like Mountain & Cement producers like Cement near Laramie have had a hard time expanding capacity. The environmental requirements make it take seven years or more for such companies to complete the capacity increase.

According to expert analysis, the cement production capacity in the United States will increase by about 16 million tons in the next four years, but it still can not meet the domestic demand for cement.

In the long term, the Portland Cement Association (PCA) has predicted that cement consumption in the United States will increase by 9.7% in 2014 and 2015, reaching 86 million tons in 2014. Cement consumption in the United States is expected to rise by 11% in 2016. PCA also expects cement consumption in the United States to reach 119 million tons by 2018.

Due to the recovery and expansion of the economy, the industrial infrastructure of the United States has been strengthened, which has led to an increase in domestic product shipments in the United States, but also stimulated product consumption. The Portland Cement Association of America believes that by 2008, the volume of cement in the United States will exceed 117 million tons.
