< DIV align = justify > Despite expectations of a slowdown in the US economy, experts predict that cement consumption this year will increase by 2.3% over the same period last year to 129.6 million tons, entering the third consecutive year of growth. In addition, experts also predict that cement consumption will increase by 1.2% in 2007.
< DIV align = justify > The PCA (Portland Cement Association) Spring Forecast had predicted cement consumption to reach 3.5% in 2006.
< DIV align = justify > Edward Sullivan, chief economist at the PCA, said: "Higher interest rates, higher oil prices and inflation will lead to a contraction in consumer spending.". Affected by these factors, the housing construction industry will decline sharply in 2006 and 2007, and the recovery of the non-housing construction industry will also slow down.
< DIV align = justify > Sullivan also hopes that falling unemployment will fuel a new wave of cautious public spending.
< DIV align = justify > In addition, the PCA summer forecast says the tough market conditions of the past two years have now improved significantly. According to the latest PCA survey, only two States in the United States reported tight market conditions, compared with 30 States in 2004 and 2005. In the first half of 2006, a large number of cement imports from the United States effectively solved the domestic supply crisis.
