According to PV magazine on October 30, about three weeks ago, a 30KWh household battery energy storage system exploded in Lauterbach, Hesse, central Germany. The owner of the energy storage system is an electronics technician specializing in energy and building services with 20 years of professional experience.
His home was destroyed in the explosion, the risk of collapse is relatively high, the police and insurance investigators have not yet entered, the cause of the accident can not be confirmed. According to the homeowner, the battery energy storage system consists of three battery packs produced by Basen Technology in Shenzhen, China. BR-48200B and MY-381 19-inch lithium iron phosphate battery systems with a capacity of 10 kwh were purchased from Alibaba platform in two batches in June 2022 (2) and June 2023 (1).
The battery system is assembled with a photovoltaic system and two inverters. According to the homeowner, the photovoltaic system is expanded from 15.47 KW to 19.565 KW. The two inverters are Victron's Multiplus II 5000 and Solax Solax X1 4.2. At present, the cause of the explosion is not yet clear, and there are no electrical clues. Before the accident, the battery had a state of charge (SOC) of 90.2% and a voltage of 52.41 V. After the
explosion, the basement where the battery system was installed was filled with white smoke. However, there was hardly any sign of fire near the battery storage unit, and the inverter installed in the other room was not damaged. After the
explosion, the homeowner said he smelled an odor similar to "lithium" and was trying to conduct safety tests on outdoor equipment to find clues to the accident from the smoke produced by the burning.
