2023, First Solar broke ground on a manufacturing facility in Iberia Parish, Louisiana, the company's fifth fully vertically integrated facility in the United States.
The project is believed to be the largest capital investment in the history of the region, with an investment of about $ 1.1 billion. It aims to expand the production capacity of photovoltaic solar panels in the United States . The plant is expected to start shipping in the first half of 2026, when the company's capacity will increase by 3.5 GW, reaching about 14 GW in the United States and 25 GW globally by 2026. When
completed, the fully vertically integrated plant will cover more than 2 million square feet and be designed to turn a single piece of glass into a shippable Series 7 module in about 4.5 hours, producing a dozen new Louisiana-made solar panels per minute.
"First Solar's selection of our state to build its newest solar panel production facility solidifies Louisiana's position as a global leader in the energy transition." Governor Edwards said.
Since 2020, First Solar has embarked on a $ 4.1 billion manufacturing expansion strategy. Its global manufacturing output has grown from about 6 GW in 2020 to 13 GW today . It is expected that production in the United States and India will reach about 12 GW in the second half of 2023 to 2026.
In addition to the Louisiana facility, First Solar commissioned its third Ohio facility this year and expects to complete its new Alabama facility as well as an expansion of its existing Ohio facility in 2024.
