Malaysian Department of Statistics. The cement unit price index increased by 1.2% to 3.2%, with the highest increase in Terengganu and Kelantan (3.2%), followed by Penang, Kedah and Perlis (1.8%) and Pahang (1.6%). Sand prices generally rose 0.1% to 4.8% in Peninsular, Sabah and Sarawak.
Steel prices fell slightly, with the unit price index falling by 0.1% to 1.0%, but the steel component price index rose by 0.1% to 1.1% in all regions. On a year-on-year basis, steel prices fell by 3.2% to 7.1%, with the largest declines in Sibu (7.1%), Penang-Kedah-Perlis (6.8%) and Kota Kinabalu (6.5%). Cement prices rose by 2.0% to 6.1% year-on-year. The average price of ordinary Portland cement
in December edged up 0.8% to RM24.55 per 50kg bag, while the average price of steel edged up 0.1% to RM3,512.10 per tonne. The Building Materials Cost Index (BCI), which includes steel bars, rose 0.1% to 2.0% month-on-month in the Peninsula, 0.1% to 0.9% in Sabah and mixed in parts of Sarawak.
