Tunisia's cement industry currently has nine operating enterprises, eight of which produce ordinary Portland cement and one focuses on white cement production, providing more than 3500 direct and indirect jobs for the country. In terms of geographical distribution, these industrial facilities are mainly concentrated in the districts of Jebel Jelud, Hablerassas, Jebel Ust, Naifza, Umm El Helil in Tajruvin, Ruysat in Kairouan, Gabes and Feriana in Kasserine. It is estimated that Tunisia's annual cement production capacity is maintained between 11 million and 12 million tons, while the domestic market demand is about 7 million tons, which is only more than half of the production capacity. It is worth noting that 60% of the domestic sales occur in rural areas, which shows the wide demand for this material in rural construction.
The Libyan market forms a central pillar of Tunisian cement exports. Thanks to its geographical proximity and the excellent quality of Tunisian cement, Libya has long been the top export destination of Tunisian cement, far ahead of Italy, which ranks second. In view of Libya's current huge reconstruction needs and infrastructure construction projects, the country's annual cement import demand is about 4 million tons, and Tunisia exports about 1 million tons of cement to Libya every year. Despite fierce competition from many countries, Tunisia has managed to occupy a considerable share of the market.
