Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobashidze recently announced that Hunnewell Cement's Kaspi Cement Plant will launch a $70 million modernization and expansion project, which plans to add a new technology production line to increase annual capacity by 400000 tons, eventually reaching 2 million tons. This scale not only means that Georgia will completely achieve self-sufficiency in cement, but also marks that the country's strategic goal of getting rid of import dependence in the field of building materials industry has entered a substantive landing stage.
Hunnewell Cement is the only enterprise with full-process cement production capacity in Georgia. The whole process from raw material processing to finished product delivery is autonomous and controllable. This industrial status makes it play an irreplaceable role in ensuring the safety of national building materials. After the completion of the US $70 million investment, the total capacity of the Kaspi plant will jump from the existing 1.6 million tons to 2 million tons, which is enough to cover all the cement needs of large-scale infrastructure and development projects in the country, and completely change the situation that Georgia has long relied partly on imports to fill the supply gap. In his speech, Kobashize clearly positioned the project as a core measure to strengthen national economic independence, emphasizing that its primary direction is to substantially reduce import dependence and supply the local market with the highest quality local products.
From the perspective of project background, Kaspi Cement Plant was built in 1926 and has nearly a century of industrial heritage. This expansion is not only a continuation of this historical tradition, but also a key leap to achieve industrial modernization by introducing the latest environmental protection standards. The new production line will be configured according to the most stringent environmental standards, maximizing production capacity while minimizing ecological impact, and embedding green production principles into all aspects of the manufacturing process.
On the whole, the expansion plan of Kaspi Cement Plant is not only a simple capacity addition, but also an important industrial fulcrum of Georgia under the independent strategy of energy and building materials. Once the upper limit of annual production capacity of 2 million tons is reached, Georgia will not only achieve complete internal circulation in cement, a basic industrial material, but also provide stable, low-cost and high-quality local supply guarantee for subsequent large-scale transportation, energy and urban infrastructure construction, thus reducing the vulnerability caused by external supply chain fluctuations at the level of national economic security.
