Recently, the expansion project of Pioneer Cement Plant was completed. Ethiopia's president, Te Atse-Selassie, inaugurated the new modern cement production plant at Dire Dawa, a joint venture between local and Chinese investors that will create at least 550 direct jobs. Speaking at the completion ceremony of the expansion project of the Pioneer Cement Plant, Habtamu Tegeen, Minister of Mines of Ethiopia, also said that the country's annual cement production capacity has reached 20 million tons. He disclosed that efforts were being made to further increase cement production by launching four coal processing plants to support the industry. At the same time, Ethiopia is also expanding its production capacity in cement, steel and other key building materials to help the development of the construction industry.
Through short-term expansion cooperation between Ethiopian and Chinese investors, Pioneer Cement Plant has now put into production high-quality cement. According to the general manager of the plant, Leon Zorn, Pioneer Cement has been operating for 16 years, and the expansion project has increased cement production capacity by 600,000 tons, providing employment opportunities for 550 citizens. The plant has also been recognized by the administrative mayor, Kadir Khuhar, for its important role in creating jobs, promoting local economic development and adopting environmentally friendly technologies.
At present, the utilization rate of cement production capacity in Ethiopia is about 50%, and the cement can be self-sufficient. However, because Ethiopia is a landlocked country, the export of cement is facing challenges, and the export is essential to improve the utilization rate of production capacity.
