Algeria, announced at the 44th annual meeting of Shelter Afrique that the country had achieved a historic transformation from highly dependent on imports of building materials to self-sufficiency and export. He said that the leap was due to a clear strategic vision and a firm national will to achieve economic sovereignty.
At present, Algeria produces nearly 42 million tons of cement, 7 million tons of steel bars, 280 million square meters of ceramic tiles and 40 million tons of bricks annually. These figures not only mark a huge leap in industrial capacity, but also show that it is enough to support large-scale infrastructure projects at home and abroad. In recent years, Algeria has witnessed a significant shift in the cement industry from a cement importer to a pre-eminent exporter, especially in 2023 and 2024, when cement and clinker exports grew significantly as domestic demand for cement was only 21 million tons.
Bellaribi pointed out that relying on modern production lines and a solid industrial base, Algeria has been able to meet domestic demand and supply building materials to many African countries at the same time. As a result, the construction and public works sector has gained strong momentum, accounting for about 12.9% of GDP, and has become a strategic pillar to promote national development and regional economic integration.
