According to the Saudi Press Agency, Saudi Railways (hereinafter: SAR) announced that it had signed the agreement with French train company Alstom.
SAR will conduct operational tests and necessary studies to adapt hydrogen trains to the Saudi environment and prepare for the future operation of hydrogen trains.
Saudi Arabia's Minister of Transport and Logistics and Chairman of the SAR Board of Directors, Eng. Saleh Al, said that this was part of Saudi Arabia's plan to achieve a sustainable transport system, and that hydrogen trains would use the latest intelligent technology.
He said that SAR is committed to playing a leading role in realizing the Saudi Green Initiative, which is derived from Saudi Vision 2030, which stipulates increasing the country's dependence on clean energy, reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment.
Hydrogen, which can be produced from renewable energy and natural gas, is a key fuel for the transition to a low-carbon world in the next few years.
SAR's CEO Dr. Bashar Al highlighted the company's commitment to implementing initiatives in line with Saudi Arabia's national transport and logistics strategy.
He said that hydrogen trains are one of the most important innovations in the field of sustainable transportation, and the energy needed for the operation of hydrogen trains is carbon-free. This makes the hydrogen train an attractive option to drive sustainable energy development, with a positive impact on the environment, the economy and future generations.
