Lafarge Africa announced a major capacity expansion plan, aiming to achieve an annual output of 5.5 million tons of cement through two main production lines in Ashaka and Shagamu. The company has sent a notice to the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the investing public detailing that the Ashaka plant will achieve an annual output of 2 million tons and the Shagamu plant will achieve an annual output of 3.5 million tons upon completion of the expansion. The two new production lines will use dry process, equipped with preheater kiln, vertical raw mill and cement mill roller press to ensure energy efficiency, according to
company secretary Advenmi Arod. This upgrade is expected to improve product availability and enhance Lafarge Africa's ability to efficiently serve customers in key markets.
The expansion comes on the heels of last year's announcement that Huaxin Building Materials acquired an 83.81% stake in Lafarge Africa, demonstrating the new controlling shareholder's commitment to infrastructure development in Nigeria. Speaking about the project, CEO Lolu Arad-Akinyemi said the expansion reflected the company's long-term confidence in Nigeria's growth potential and was aimed at supporting the country's infrastructure and construction needs.
Arad-Akinyemi further elaborated that the project is not only about capacity growth to deliver operational and sustainability benefits, but also supports value creation for customers and shareholders, while promoting economic activity and job creation in the community and the broader building ecosystem. He stressed that the plant expansion is a strategic investment that reinforces Lafarge Africa's role in supporting the country's development. By adding capacity to its flagship plant, the company is strengthening its supply chain and improving its responsiveness to market demand, making the business better able to support key areas such as housing, commercial construction and infrastructure. The application of
new technologies enables the company to integrate modern production technologies that improve efficiency, reliability and environmental performance, in line with its commitment to responsible operations. As a building solutions company, Lafarge Africa produces premium cement, mortar and ready-mixed concrete products, and this expansion at the Shagamu Cement Plant in Ogun State and the Ashaka Cement Plant in Gombe State re-emphasises its commitment to strengthening local cement production.
The company said it would continue to focus on strictly implementing its expansion plan, maintain transparent communication with stakeholders, and continue to invest in strengthening its operations throughout Nigeria.
