local time, lithium batteries exploded and caught fire at the National Information Resources Service Center in Daejeon, South Korea, eventually paralyzing 647 government systems, with nearly one third of the systems suspended.
According to the official report, the fire was caused by the explosion of a lithium-ion battery UPS that had been cut off and planned to be transferred to the basement. The battery involved was from LG Group of Korea. The battery that
caught fire was produced in 2012 and has been used for more than 12 years.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time that South Korea has caused large-scale service disruption due to centralized data center failures.
