Recently, inverter giant SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA) announced that it will expand manufacturing to the United States, with production expected to begin in 2025. SMA plans to build capacity of 3.5 GW per year at the new facility , with the potential to expand over time.
The US site selection is expected to take place in the first half of 2024.
Currently, SMA is working with multiple States and potential partners to evaluate the most strategic manufacturing locations and methods.
"The US is a key market and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) offers extraordinary opportunities for long-term growth," said J Jürgen Reinert, chief executive of SMA. "With this step, we will significantly strengthen our market share in the U.S. and position SMA for future growth.". Global demand for climate-friendly solar solutions and the urgent need for greater energy efficiency continue to increase. This is reflected in our order book, and with our broad portfolio of solutions, we are ideally positioned to benefit from this decision.
Local manufacturing is a strategic part
of SMA's growth trajectory "This strategic decision will incentivize SMA's growth and provide a solution for markets looking to source products domestically," said Jeppe Johansen, Managing Director, SMA America. "We commend the Biden administration for working with the Department of Energy and the Internal Revenue Service to adopt bold policies to stimulate clean energy manufacturing in the United States.". Our market potential is huge and local manufacturing is a strategic part of our growth trajectory.
US production site to further expand SMA capacity
Manufacturing expansion in the US will add 3.5G W of capacity annually, with SMA's expected manufacturing expansion in line with the construction of the company's GW plant, doubling its capacity in Germany to 40 GW per year. Solutions for large-scale PV and energy storage plants will be manufactured at Niestetal for global deployment
from 2025.
