cement clinker production capacity of the United States ranks fourth in the world. Over the past decade, cement production capacity in the United States has been relatively stagnant, and a large part of demand depends on imports. In the first half of 2024, the United States imported a quarter of cement and clinker. According to the latest data from the
United States Geological Survey (USGS), in the first five months of 2024, the total shipments of Portland cement and mixed cement in the United States and Puerto Rico were 40.117 million tons, down 4.4% from the same period last year. Shipments of masonry cement were 935 thousand tons, down 6.1% year on year. The United States is one of the few net importers of cement, and the decline in cement shipments is mainly affected by the domestic impact of the United States itself. In the first half of 2024, 97.8 million square feet of new construction were started in the United States, down from 147 million square feet in the same period last year, according to the CommercialEdge report. The construction market has been affected by the rising cost of construction loans and economic uncertainty, resulting in a slight decline in cement sales.
