Egypt is the second largest economy in Africa after Nigeria. It is also the largest cement producer and consumer in Africa. The cement industry in Egypt plays a fundamental role in the national economy and directly contributes to infrastructure development and the construction industry. Up to now, Egypt has a cement production capacity of 92 million tons. Most of the cement plants are located in the Nile Delta region, mainly because a large number of people are concentrated here. Although the cement production capacity is huge, it has not been fully developed in recent years. The capacity utilization rate is 51%, and the overcapacity is quite serious. In the first half of
2024, the consumption of cement in Egypt was 21 million tons. Affected by geopolitics, foreign exchange shortage and inflation, the demand for cement was restrained and the consumption declined. Although these problems have been alleviated and the demand for large-scale projects has started slowly driven by the influx of foreign direct investment, it is difficult for the annual consumption to increase, which is expected to decline by 4% to 45 million tons.
