The Digital New Energy DataBM. Com was informed that on July 16, OCl Tokuyama Semiconductor Materials Sdn. Bhd. (OTSM), a joint venture between Tokuyama, a Japanese chemical company, and OCI, a Korean polysilicon giant, held a groundbreaking ceremony in Samalaju Industrial Park, Malaysia.
According to OCI's official website, the new OTSM factory is planned to be built on an idle plot of about 132000 square meters in OCI TerraSus Park. The plant will be completed and commissioned in the first half of 2027, with the goal of beginning volume production and sales of semiconductor-grade polysilicon from 2029, with an annual production capacity of 8,000 metric tons.
On July 9, Tokuyama, a Japanese chemical company, announced the establishment of OTSM. Tokuyama and OCI TerraSus, a Malaysian subsidiary of OCI, each hold 50% of the shares.
Earlier, on December 13, 2023, Tokuyama announced that the board of directors of the company held a meeting on the same day and decided to sign a joint venture agreement with OCI to jointly produce semi-finished semiconductor-grade polysilicon in Malaysia.
According to the announcement at that time, the two sides initially planned to produce about 8000 metric tons annually, with a total investment of US $300 million, and the production capacity will gradually increase to about 10,000 metric tons in the future. The 10,000 metric ton polysilicon plant is under construction with a total investment of $435 million,
according to PV magazine.
In addition, in 2016, OCI purchased a 20,000 metric ton polysilicon plant in Sarawak, Malaysia, from Tokuyama. After the acquisition in 2017, OCI entered the polysilicon field.
