in South Africa reported that in the first half of 2023, the number of solar panels imported from China quadrupled to 3.4G W, and its peak production was equivalent to the total capacity of the country's listed power companies. Research by Ember, a
British energy think tank, shows that in the first six months of this year, China's exports of photovoltaic products increased by one third to 114 GW.
Europe is the largest importer, accounting for more than half (52.5%), but the fastest growth in imports is in Africa and the Middle East . South Africa was the main driver of import growth in Africa, increasing by more than 50% .
South Africa was the main support region for the increase in the number of solar panel products exported from China to Africa (more than doubled, with an increase of 187%).
The country's imports of photovoltaic products increased by 438%, second only to Europe, ranking second in the world. "In the past 12 months, South Africa has imported 4 GW of solar panels from China, which generate about 3% of its annual demand,"
the report said.
The report also noted that "frequent load shedding" or planned outages , which can last up to 12 hours a day, are an important factor in the continued increase in local solar capacity.
