Recently, the second patent infringement dispute between the two leading photovoltaic enterprises ushered in an important node.
On January 14, Atlas disclosed that recently, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) sued Canadian Solar Inc. Hereinafter referred to as "Atlas Group") made a final decision on the validity of the relevant TOPCon battery patents:
it was determined that a number of patent invalidity claims made by Atlas Group were established, and the claims of Maxeon for the patents used to sue Atlas Group in the United States were declared invalid. The nearly two-year patent dispute
between Maxeon and Atlas was launched in early 2024. In March of that year, Maxeon announced that it had filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Atlas Solar Power (CSIQ) in Texas, USA, focusing on the alleged unauthorized use of its TOPCon solar cell technology.
This is not the first fight between Maxeon and Ates. As early as 2020, Maxeon filed a lawsuit against the Japanese subsidiary of Atlas for infringement of its shingled component technology and demanded compensation of 10 million yen. Contrary to the outcome of the dispute in 2026, after two years of seesaw, the two sides reached a settlement in June 2022 on the condition that "Atlas temporarily withdrew from the Japanese shingle market until the second quarter of 2025".
It is noteworthy that the number of photovoltaic patent disputes ending in reconciliation has gradually increased in recent years. Or because of the continuous loss of the whole industry, China's leading photovoltaic companies, which are deeply involved in patent disputes, seem to be "reluctant to fight". On September 19,
2025, Jingke Energy and Longji Green Energy jointly announced that they had reached a settlement agreement on the ongoing patent claims and legal matters of both parties and their affiliated companies worldwide. Late in the night of November 29,
2025, Jingao Technologies and Zhengtai Xinneng issued a joint statement saying that the two sides and their affiliated companies had reached a settlement over ongoing patent disputes worldwide.
In addition, at the end of 2024, Maxeon also reached a global settlement with Tongwei Solar Energy (Hefei) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Tongwei Co ., Ltd. on shingled solar cell and module technology and related patent disputes between the two sides.
