Recently, Xcel Energy announced that it has reached a formal agreement with Google to deploy a 300 MW 30 GWh iron-air battery system in Minnesota.
The energy storage system uses Form Energy's innovative technology, which will be matched with 1,400 MW of wind energy and 200 MW of solar energy to achieve long-term energy storage for up to 100 hours. And that cost of the system can be compete with that of a traditional base load power plant, so that the system is more suitable for large-scale grid-level application. After
completion, it will become the largest battery project in the world in terms of gigawatt hour energy storage capacity .
Iron-air batteries store and release electric energy through the process of oxidation (rust) and reduction (deoxidation) of thousands of iron particles in contact with air. The technology logic is clear and safe and controllable.
