India: Cement prices may fall in the second half

< DIV > New Delhi, India's cement prices are expected to fall in the second half of 2007 as domestic cement production grows, following a sharp rise in prices in 2006, according to a forecast by Fitch, a credit rating agency.
< DIV > "Cement prices are likely to soften from the second half of 2007 as production capacity continues to grow in the future," Fitch said in a news release.
< DIV > Fitch forecasts that India's cement production capacity will increase significantly in FY08 and FY09, and the benefits from the expansion will be reflected in FY08-09.
< DIV > South India, which has the largest planned capacity increase, will see a hit to operating profit, Fitch said. Fitch also points out that cement prices in India rose sharply in 2006 as demand for cement increased and the High Court tightened controls on overloading, which led to higher freight rates.
< DIV > India's cement market is the second largest market after China, with an annual domestic cement consumption of 135 million tons and an existing annual production capacity of 160 million tons. During the 2005-06 fiscal year, India's cement exports reached 9 million tons due to the rising demand for cement in the Middle East. Fitch said that with Holcim, Lafarge, Heidelberg and Italcementi entering the Indian market successively, the major cement companies have stepped up the merger process, but this is still far from achieving a complete and huge cement market. < BR > (Please indicate the source for reprinting on China Cement Net)
