Recently, India has expressed support for plans to build fast railways between Mumbai and Ahmedabad and between Bangalore and Chennai (Madras) at speeds of 250 to 300 kilometers per hour. The Railway Technical and Economic Services Corporation of India, supported by two international trade cooperation agencies of Japan, has submitted a feasibility study on the construction of a 490-km express railway between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. If the upgrade of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad line goes ahead, the travel time between the two commercial centres will be reduced from the current five to six hours to two hours. The project will cost $1.8 billion and is expected to be completed by 2010.

Plans to convert the 359-km Bangalore-Chennai line into an express rail link in phases are under study, according to India's Ministry of Railways minister.
