According to a report released by Procomer, a government trade promotion agency, Costa Rica's cement imports increased from 10418 tons in 2014 to 107294 tons in 2016, an increase of 930% in just two years. Among them, 97% of the cement imported by the 21016 comes from China, and China has become the main source of cement imports.
However, the value of cement imports was only $18.3 million in 2016, an increase of only 5.4 times compared with 2014. Cemex and Holcim are currently the main cement producers in Costa Rica. The volume and value of imported cement are disproportionate, and Costa Rica's domestic cement producers will face competition from cheap Chinese cement.
