French designer Jean couvreur has launched a bench called "banc frais" ", which is specially designed for Lyon's demain festival to provide its unique cool comfort.
The furniture is made of white concrete and features a small water surface supported by a water pump system. Because of the inherent materiality, porosity and inertia of concrete, the water on the bench is always clear and fresh.
As global warming continues to intensify, the global average temperature is expected to rise by as much as 1-2 degrees by 2050, and in the process, the development of buildings in urban centers will aggravate this phenomenon, especially in public spaces. In the past, fountains often provided sanitation and fresh drinking water for town squares, and people often gathered around the fountains. This time, Jean couvreur hopes to encourage the spontaneous use of benches during the demain festival in Lyon and transform them into an urban oasis and a fertile island through the design of "banc frais" ".
The project not only provides a technology demonstration, but also aims to promote simple and inexpensive initiatives, from small to medium-sized. The project also celebrates ancient principles and techniques that are often forgotten or little used. The banc frais, which seems to have been cut from a huge block of concrete, is the purest expression of this material's characteristics, a block of untreated concrete with a delicate puddle in the center, as if it had been naturally eroded by water. The center of the bench is the source of the water gushing out, and the water in it will gradually evaporate. The designer explained.
