According to the Argentine Portland Cement Manufacturers Association, in January 2017, the national cement shipment volume was 878200 tons, with a year-on-year increase of 1.8%; in 2016, the cement shipment volume decreased by 10.7%.
Cement shipments are a key indicator in the analysis of construction activity. According to the data, 868590 tons of cement were used in the domestic market in January, accounting for 98.9% of the shipment, and the remaining 9632 tons were exported.
Construction was one of the sectors hardest hit by the recession last year. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, construction activity fell by 12.7% that year, and although it rebounded in the last few months, it did not reverse the overall trend of decline.
The level of activity in the construction industry has also affected the trade in consumables. Cement shipments in 2016 totaled 10904533 tons, down 10.7% from 12215188 tons in 2015, according to the Cement Association.
