On September 5, the Federal Court of Minas Gerais, Brazil, issued an emergency injunction to revoke all environmental permits of Sigma Lithium's mining company, requiring its Grottadu-Sirio Lithium Mine to completely stop mining, ore processing and other production operations from now on.
It is reported that the mine, located in the lithium valley of Brazil, is a large hard rock lithium mine in the world, with an annual output of 330000 tons of spodumene concentrate, most of which are exported to China, and is a key import channel for lithium salt enterprises in China.
The suspension of production originated from the local traditional community rights prosecution, residents said that the project EIA fraud, worried that mining operations will damage the ecological environment, and eventually pushed the court to issue a suspension ban.
The accusation was denied by Sigma Lithium, saying that the site selection and qualification approval of the project are in line with local laws and regulations in Brazil. At present, the company has filed an appeal, but the lithium mine can not resume work in the short term, and the time of resumption of production is totally uncertain.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time that the project has been shut down. Over the years, the project has been repeatedly interrupted by local traditional community lawsuits.
