Tesla cooperated with LG New Energy to build a factory in the United States for Megapack 3 lithium iron phosphate batteries to strengthen the local supply chain, avoid tariffs and reduce dependence on Chinese batteries.

On March 16, Tesla signed a supply agreement with LG New Energy of Korea to build a $4.3 billion (nearly 30 billion yuan) lithium iron phosphate prismatic battery production base in Lansing, Michigan, USA, which is expected to be put into operation in 2027.

The U.S. Department of the Interior said in a statement that the batteries produced by the factory will be used to supply Tesla's Megapack 3 energy storage system in Houston.

It is understood that as early as July 2025, Bloomberg News has disclosed the cooperation agreement, LG New Energy has signed a $4.3 billion three-year global lithium iron phosphate energy storage battery supply contract to cope with U.S. tariff pressures and help customers reduce their dependence on imported C ore from China, and LG New Energy Co., Ltd. However, customers and specific application scenarios were not disclosed at that time. The official announcement confirmed that the supply eventually landed in the United States to build factories, and the battery core was directed to supply Tesla Megapack 3 large-scale energy storage system.

It is worth noting that the Lansing plant was originally developed by LG Energy's joint venture with General Motors, but the automaker decided to withdraw from the partnership at the end of 2024 as part of a reduction in investment in electric vehicles and sold its stake to LG. LG transformed the plant last year to produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) square batteries, with an annual capacity of 50 G Wh.
