On June 8, the construction of the new Three Gorges waterway, with a total investment of 77.208 billion yuan and a construction period of 112 months (including the 12-month project preparation period), started in Yichang. As the first major national landmark project of the 15th Five-Year Plan, it has brought triple benefits to the cement industry.
The first is the demand driven by short-term engineering construction: the earthwork excavation volume of the project is about 150 million cubic meters, the total demand for concrete is twice that of the original Three Gorges ship lock, and the converted demand for cement is 4.185 million tons (calculated by 450 kg of cement per cubic meter), which will give priority to the cement enterprises in Hubei and along the Yangtze River.
The second is to optimize logistics, reduce costs and improve efficiency in the medium term: after the completion of the new channel, the annual navigation capacity of the Three Gorges Project will rise to 336 million tons, the waiting time for ships will be greatly shortened, the cost of water transportation for cement enterprises along the Yangtze River will be reduced, the scope of market radiation will be expanded, and the inter-provincial barriers will be broken.
Third, long-term activation of infrastructure along the Yangtze River and optimization of the industry structure: the supporting infrastructure in the Yangtze River Economic Belt has been accelerated, and the demand for cement has been continuously released; the 10,000-ton navigation has also facilitated the export of cement enterprises, alleviated regional overcapacity, promoted the synergy of industries along the Yangtze River, and further enhanced the industry concentration.
