On September 23, several South Korean media reported that the Suwon District Court of South Korea had made a first-instance judgment on the case of "Huacheng Battery Factory Fire", sentenced Park Chunyu, the representative of the enterprise involved, to 15 years'imprisonment, and sentenced Park Chongyan, the son of Park Chunyu and the general minister of the enterprise involved, to 15 years' imprisonment and a fine of 1 million won.
South Korean media also said that this is the highest sentence imposed in related cases since the implementation of the Major Disaster Punishment Act in 2022.
The fire accident occurred on June 24, 2024. A fire
broke out at a battery manufacturing plant in Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, and the fierce fire burned for five hours before it was extinguished. The fire eventually killed 23 people, including 17 Chinese citizens.
