On June 16, the National Bureau of Statistics released data showing that the cement output in May was 165 million tons, down 8.1% from the same period last year; the cement output in January-May was 659.39 million tons, down 4% from the same period last year. From January to May of
2024, the national cement output was 687.27 million tons. Therefore, the total cement output from January to May of this year decreased by 27.88 million tons, or 4.06%, compared with the same period last year.
In addition, according to the data over the years, the cement output from January to May 2014 reached 908 million tons, which is the highest level over the years. From January to May this year, cement production dropped by 249 million tons, or 27.42%, compared with the historical peak.
In contrast, in 2014, the national cement clinker production capacity was 1.773 billion tons, while up to now, the national clinker production capacity was 1.793 billion tons. It means that compared with 2014, the domestic cement industry has increased clinker production capacity by 20 million tons, but the demand for cement has decreased by 249 million tons, which shows the severity of overcapacity.
