According to a comprehensive report by Hong Kong Wen Wei Po, the sovereignty dispute between China and Vietnam over the South China Sea has triggered large-scale anti-China riots in Vietnam. Nearly 5,000 people took to the streets in Vietnam's Binh Duong province yesterday, severely impacting more than 1,000 Taiwan-funded enterprises and injuring at least three Taiwanese businessmen. Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a travel advisory yesterday, calling on local Chinese to be vigilant and step up security after reports that anti-China demonstrations had spread to an industrial zone in the northern province of Taiping; The Taiwan authorities have raised the travel warning in Vietnam's Binh Duong and Dong Nai provinces to orange. Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou said at the KMT Central Standing Committee meeting on the 14th that he had asked the Vietnamese government to ensure the safety of Taiwanese businessmen and overseas Chinese through the foreign affairs department. Vietnamese authorities have detained 600 rioters.
A large number of factories were damaged and two mainland workers were reported to have died .
More than 1,000 Taiwan-owned factories were reportedly damaged and at least 13 were set on fire. At least three Taiwanese businessmen were injured, and two mainland Chinese workers were reported to have died.
A Taiwanese businessman said that when the demonstrators saw Chinese, they destroyed it, and the riot lasted for a period of time without being stopped by the police: "It was like going crazy. There were thousands of people, and then they began to fight whenever they saw Chinese. Probably none of the Taiwanese businessmen I know seemed to have not been hit. Most of them had to hide in the company as long as they could hide out. But it could be a little more dangerous.
As far as the cement industry is concerned, Taiwan's Happy Cement Co., Ltd. also has more cement business in Vietnam.
Xingfu Cement Co., Ltd. was founded in 1974; in 1979, Xingfu Cement began to build its first cement plant, which was put into operation in 1981; in 1990, the shares of Xingfu Cement began to be traded on the stock market; Since then, Happy Cement has been committed to the expansion and upgrading of its cement plants, two of which achieved ISO 9002 quality management certification in 1996; in 2012, Happy Cement Group now has an annual production capacity of 6 million tons in Vietnam.
It is reported that Chen Liangchuan, chairman of Happy Cement Group, has invested in four companies in Vietnam in his personal name, including Fushan Cement Company, Xiyang Cement Company, Fuyi Liability Company Limited and Xingda International Liability Company Limited.
Among them, in 2012, the annual output of Fukuyama Cement in Haiyang Province was 4 million metric tons, and the annual output of Xiyang Cement Company in Ninh Binh Province reached 2 million tons by October 2012. In 2013, Vietnam produced 70 million tons of cement, so Happy Cement has a high proportion of cement production in Vietnam.
The author speculates that since the two cement enterprises of Happy Cement Group in Vietnam are not in the riot demonstration area, their cement plants may not be affected by the riots.
