Air Liquide and Iveco Group have achieved a memorandum of understanding to jointly build Europe's first truck high-pressure hydrogen station.

According to Hydrogen Fuel News on July 1, Air Liquide and Iveco Group have paved the way for hydrogen-powered long-distance freight transport in Europe. The recently opened first high-pressure hydrogen station for long-haul trucks is the first of its kind in Europe . This marks a step forward in the joint commitment of Air Liquide and the IVECO Group to the development of hydrogen transport in Europe.

This commitment is in line with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two companies in December 2021. The objective of the Memorandum of

Understanding (MoU) is to promote hydrogen energy as an important driver of energy transformation in the transportation sector by leveraging the expertise of both sides.

These include Air Liquide's unique expertise across the hydrogen value chain – production, storage and distribution – and the Iveco Group's expertise as a manufacturer of alternative fuel vehicles.

"Our strategy for increasingly sustainable mobility is based on a technology-neutral approach, and hydrogen mobility is a key component on this path." Gerrit Marx, CEO of Iveco Group, said in a press release about the opening of the hydrogen station. "In fact, it provides an essential solution for commercial vehicle applications with high energy requirements, such as long-distance transportation." Max added.

Air Liquide's high-pressure hydrogen filling station opened in Fos-sur-Mer, near Marseille, France, on June 26, 2023. Guests attending the opening ceremony had the opportunity to visit the large-capacity high-pressure hydrogen station, which supplies 1 ton of low-carbon hydrogen through pipelines every day. They also witnessed a prototype of Iveco's heavy-duty fuel cell truck for the first time.

This heavy duty hydrogen truck is designed for long haul with fast refueling times at 700 bar pressure. Iveco Group plans to deliver these hydrogen trucks from the end of 2023.

The Fos-sur-Mer hydrogen station is part of the French-funded "Hydrogen in Aix-Marseille: towards sustainable ecology and transport" (HyAMMED) project, and is part of the European H2Haul project co-funded by the "Partnership for Clean Hydrogen". A

second high-capacity hydrogen filling station (700 bars, 2 tons per day), designed for heavy vehicles, is planned to be installed in Salon-de-Provence and is expected to fuel 50 IVECO hydrogen trucks from 2025.

"In order to promote the widespread use of hydrogen energy, we must jointly create conditions for the industry to flourish," said Erwin Penfornis, vice president of the global business line of Air Liquide Hydrogen Energy in France. So that vehicle manufacturers and transport operators can make this transition is essential.
