Break the traditional mode of producing hydrogen by pure water in the world.

(June 2) It was learned from the Chinese Academy of Engineering that after on-site inspection by the expert group of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, it was confirmed that the world's first offshore pilot test of in-situ direct electrolysis hydrogen production technology for offshore wind power without desalinization was successful in the offshore wind farm of Xinghua Bay, Fujian Province.

The pilot test was carried out in mid-late May at the offshore wind farm in Xinghua Bay, Fujian Province, using the world's first floating offshore hydrogen production platform "Dongfu No.1" jointly developed with renewable energy, which integrates in-situ hydrogen production, intelligent energy conversion management, safety detection and control, handling and lifting systems. After withstanding the test of marine environment such as 8 gales, 1 meter high waves and rainstorms, it has been running steadily for more than 240 hours.

The ocean is the largest hydrogen mine on the earth, and asking for water from the sea is an important direction for the future development of hydrogen energy. However, the complex composition of seawater, including more than 90 chemical elements and a large number of microorganisms and suspended particles, has brought many technical bottlenecks and challenges, such as strong corrosiveness and toxicity, catalyst deactivation, low electrolysis efficiency and so on.

In this regard, if seawater is used as raw material for indirect hydrogen production, large-scale desalination equipment is heavily relied on, the process is complex and occupies land resources, which increases the cost of hydrogen production and the difficulty of engineering construction. Well-known research teams at home and abroad have done a lot of exploration and research on direct electrolysis of seawater to produce hydrogen, but in the past half century, there has been no breakthrough theory and principle to completely avoid the impact of complex components of seawater on the electrolytic hydrogen production system. Xie Ping, academician of

the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that the technology of in-situ direct electrolysis of seawater without desalination jumped out of the traditional chemical category in principle and separated the influence of more than 90 complex elements and microorganisms in seawater on hydrogen production by electrolysis through the physical and mechanical drive of steam pressure difference. It breaks the traditional mode of producing hydrogen by pure water in the world. Direct hydrogen production from inexhaustible seawater resources, combined with offshore wind power generation technology, will change the path of global energy development in the future.

It is understood that the success of this sea trial fully marks a big step in the industrialization process of in-situ direct electrolysis of hydrogen from seawater without desalination, which means that it has formally entered a new era of direct electrolysis of hydrogen from seawater. The popularization and application of this technology will truly open up a new marine green hydrogen industry system which integrates the utilization of renewable energy such as offshore wind power, the utilization of seawater resources and the production of hydrogen energy. It is expected to form a new mode of in-situ seawater direct electrolysis hydrogen production without desalination, additional catalyst engineering, seawater transportation and pollution treatment, and to transform inexhaustible "seawater resources" into "seawater energy" in a real sense.

At the same time, an integrated in-situ seawater hydrogen production plant combined with offshore renewable energy can be built in the future, which will become the key to the large-scale development of renewable power in the near and deep sea, and accelerate the formation of China's original "marine green hydrogen" global emerging strategic industry with multi-energy complementarity. It also helps China to form a full-chain zero-hydrocarbon energy development path from original principles, subversive technologies, domestic equipment to characteristic electrolytic hydrogen production industry mode, and provides zero-carbon energy China program, Chinese wisdom and Chinese standards under the carbon neutral path.
