KAUST Photovoltaic Laboratory (KPV-Lab) announced the highest efficiency of perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, with a certified efficiency of 33.7%, surpassing its previous record of 33.2%.

Recently, the chart of the highest conversion efficiency of NREL photovoltaic technology cells has been updated again, resulting in a new efficiency record. KAUST Photovoltaic Laboratory (KPV-Lab) announced the highest efficiency of perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells

from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia, with a certified efficiency of 33.7%, surpassing its previous record of 33.2%.

According to the researchers, this is by far the highest efficiency of tandem devices in the world. The efficiency is certified by the European Solar Test Installation (ESTI) and ranks near the top of NREL's best research cell efficiency charts. In April

2023, KAUST Photovoltaic Laboratory announced the production of a perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell with a rate conversion efficiency of 33.2%. The previous record for series-connected perovskite solar cells in the industry was 32.5% set by German scientists. 32.5%! Perovskite/silicon tandem cell innovation world record!

It is reported that since 2016, the KAUST team has been steadily improving the concept of perovskite/silicon tandem batteries. They are constantly developing new materials, methods and device structures, and addressing fundamental challenges, such as how to uniformly cover the micron-scale pyramid surface of silicon cells with perovskite materials. Silicon-based materials have long been the industry standard for solar cells,

considering factors such as efficiency, durability and cost, but current silicon-based photovoltaic devices are approaching the theoretical upper limit of efficiency. At the same time, perovskite, as a rapidly rising "young upstart", is seen as likely to take the "crown" of silicon.

The market predicts that by 2032, tandem perovskite/silicon technology will account for more than $10 billion in the global photovoltaic market.
