Recently, a major research project of Guangdong Development and Reform Commission, the preliminary planning research project of large-scale CCS or CCUS cluster in Guangdong Province, was formally entrusted to the Guangdong Institute of Energy Construction of China. This project will focus on the large-scale, full-chain offshore CCS/CCUS technology development model, formulate a cluster development plan in line with the actual situation of Guangdong Province, and provide decision-making reference for achieving the goal of double carbon and high-quality economic development.

Carbon sequestration (Carbon Capture and Storage, CCS) and carbon capture, utilization and storage (Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage, CCUS) are indispensable key ways to achieve carbon neutrality. The potential of emission reduction is huge and the prospect of industrial utilization is broad, which can effectively promote the purification of fossil energy, the scale of clean energy and the low-carbon production process.

In order to implement the requirements of "Guangdong Provincial Committee and Government's Opinions on Implementing the New Development Concept Completely, Accurately and Comprehensively to Promote the Carbon Neutralization Work of Carbon Peak" and "Guangdong Province's Implementation Plan of Carbon Peak", accelerate the promotion of the advanced technology layout of CCS/CCUS in Guangdong Province, and give full play to the leading advantages of CCS/CCUS technology innovation and engineering demonstration. To promote the development of CCS/CCUS industry chain in Guangdong Province, the Guangdong Development and Reform Commission has organized the preliminary planning and research of large-scale offshore CCS or CCUS clusters of 10 million tons.

This is the first large-scale and full-process CCS/CCUS cluster planning research project with 10 million tons of land-sea linkage and source-sink matching in China. At present, most of the completed CCS/CCUS projects in China are small and scattered, and lack of regional overall planning. In addition, due to the limitation of matching conditions of carbon dioxide sources and sinks, how to effectively store the captured carbon dioxide is also a major technical problem. Based on the development status of CCUS in Guangdong Province and the conditions of carbon dioxide source and sink,

the project focuses on the technical feasibility of CCS/CCUS full chain demonstration base, explores the mode of regional large-scale CCS/CCUS cluster planning, and provides important guidance for the deployment of 10 million tons CCS/CCUS cluster projects in Guangdong Province. It is of great significance to the rapid growth of CCS/CCUS whole industry chain technology system and industrial capacity in China.

As one of the earliest enterprises in China to carry out CCUS technology research and development and engineering application exploration, Guangdong Institute has fully participated in the whole process of planning, design, construction, procurement, commissioning and acceptance of CCUS technology projects, and has accumulated rich experience in technical research and engineering practice. The undertaking of this research project also marks a new step in the comprehensive research field of CCS/CCUS technology in Guangdong Institute. The research type extends from "single project carbon sequestration" to "regional marine carbon sequestration", and realizes the leap from "million tons project" to "ten million tons cluster".
