On September 17, the "2023 Global Energy Transition High-level Forum on Green and High-quality Development of Hydrogen Energy" was held in Beijing. At the meeting, the International Research Report on Hydrogen Energy Technology and Industrial Development 2023 (hereinafter referred to as the Report), compiled by the Hydrogen Energy Branch of the China Association for the Promotion of Industrial Development, was officially released. The report shows that 2022 is the "first year " of the large-scale development of the global hydrogen energy industry, with the enthusiasm of all countries in the world rising, and the global direct investment in the field of hydrogen energy reaching 250 billion US dollars.

The report points out that as of December 2022, the global installed capacity of hydrogen production from electrolytic water is about 0.9 GW , and the cumulative installed capacity is about 1.4 GW . In 2021 , China and Europe contributed about 40% and 30% of the total installed capacity respectively. It is estimated that by 2023, the global installed capacity and cumulative installed capacity of hydrogen production from electrolytic water will reach 4.1GW and 5.5GW respectively , with an increase of 455% and 393% respectively compared with 2022.
At present, the number of green hydrogen projects announced in the world is about 680 , and the total planned installed capacity is more than 460GW . Hydrogen energy, as a "green oil" to support future energy transformation and economic development, has become the focus of global attention. According to the Report, under the net-zero emission scenario, the global installed capacity of hydrogen production from water electrolysis will reach 720 GW in 2030. The report also shows that the comprehensive cost of hydrogen production from electrolytic water is expected to drop by more than 50% in 10 years.
In China, the top-level design for the development of hydrogen energy industry is also improving day by day. Provinces, cities and districts should adapt to local conditions, seize development opportunities and actively plan layout of hydrogen energy industry. At present, the total output value of hydrogen energy planning in China's provinces and cities by 2025 is close to trillion yuan, and the scale effect under the huge market potential will be the basis for the rapid development of China's hydrogen energy industry. The report predicts that the next 10 years will be the "golden development period " of China's hydrogen energy industry.
Green hydrogen is also the focus of domestic hydrogen energy development. As of 2022, China has built and planned a renewable energy hydrogen production capacity of 4.1 million t/a, and there are about 52 water electrolysis hydrogen production projects in 2022, including 21 wind power and photovoltaic integration projects, accounting for about 40%. The report predicts that by 2030, the scale of new investment in hydrogen production from renewable energy in China will reach 375 billion yuan, and the production capacity of green hydrogen will be close to that of by-product hydrogen.
With the rapid development of industrial technology, the energy attributes of hydrogen are gradually clarified, and the application of hydrogen energy is rapidly penetrating from chemical raw materials to transportation, construction and energy fields. In the future, hydrogen energy technology is expected to be fully applied in hydrogen metallurgy, green hydrogen chemical industry, hydrogen energy storage and other fields. With the promotion of application, the demand for hydrogen energy will gradually expand, and the report predicts that by 2050, the global demand for hydrogen energy will increase 10 times compared with 2022. Driven by the rapid promotion of
transportation applications, the wave of hydrogenation infrastructure construction is also sweeping the world. According to the report, by the end of 2022, 1024 hydrogen stations have been built in the world, mainly in China, Japan, Germany, the United States and South Korea, and the technology of hydrogen production by electrolysis of water in stations has been widely used in European hydrogen stations. According to the forecast of national development strategies, the number of hydrogen stations in the world will exceed 4500 by 2030, and the world's major economies will form a diversified and networked hydrogen energy infrastructure system.
