Recently, the State Council issued the Action Plan for Continuous Improvement of Air Quality, which clearly calls for vigorous development of new and clean energy sources. By 2025, the proportion of non-fossil energy consumption will reach about 20%, and the proportion of electricity in terminal energy consumption will reach about 30%. This will further promote the cement industry to accelerate the process of new energy. In February
2022, the National Development and Reform Commission and other four departments issued the Guidelines for the Implementation of Energy-saving and Carbon Reduction Upgrading in Key Areas of High Energy-consuming Industries (2022 Edition), pointing out in the work direction of the Guidelines for the Implementation of Energy-saving and Carbon Reduction Upgrading in Cement Industry. We will support and encourage cement enterprises to use their own facilities and sites to implement waste heat and pressure utilization, alternative fuels and distributed power generation, and strive to enhance their energy "self-sufficiency" and reduce their dependence on fossil energy and external power.
For a long time, the energy structure of the cement industry is mainly coal and electricity, but in recent years, with the requirements of "double carbon", the cement industry has been laid out ahead of schedule, actively expanding the new energy track, and achieved good results.
Directly laying out the new energy industry and developing it into a major industry, and applying new energy technology to the cement industry to achieve energy optimization are the two mainstream practices of cement enterprises at present. From the perspective of current technology and business maturity, the photovoltaic industry is the most important part of the cement industry in the new energy field; secondly, cement enterprises using wind energy, biomass energy, clean energy hydrogen energy and natural gas are also involved, but the proportion is relatively low. Before
2012, China's photovoltaic industry developed slowly. After 2013, the photovoltaic industry entered the fast lane of development under the favorable policy of vigorously developing the domestic market. After China entered the first year of double carbon in 2021, the development speed of the photovoltaic market was further accelerated, and the newly installed capacity reached 55 GW in that year. The real layout of the photovoltaic industry in the
cement industry also started in 2021, and the total installed capacity of the cement industry is close to 1GW. Photovoltaic installed capacity

As the leader of cement enterprises, Conch Cement has made great efforts in the layout of new energy. In August 2021, Conch Cement acquired 100% equity of Conch New Energy held by Conch Investment Company, and Conch Cement took substantial steps in the layout of new energy. In 2022, the development progress of Conch New Energy business was accelerated, and the registered capital of Conch New Energy increased from 500 million yuan to 5 billion yuan. During the year, Conch New Energy independently invested in the establishment of 53 new energy companies, and the installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation was 475 MW at the end of the year. In 2023, Conch will further accelerate the integrated development of wind, solar, water and storage in the new energy industry. As of June 2023, the installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation will reach 513 MW.
Data show that in 2022, Conch Cement will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 204 thousand tons. Through clean energy power generation, 31000 tons of standard coal were saved, including 246 million kilowatt-hours of photovoltaic power generation and 140900 tons of emission reduction, accounting for 69.1% of clean energy power generation emission reduction.
This year, two cases of Jining Conch Cement Co., Ltd.'s Smart micro-grid with zero power purchase and Gezhouba Yicheng Cement Co., Ltd.'s Industrial green micro-grid were included in the list of typical application scenarios and cases of industrial green micro-grid in 2023. Among them, Gezhouba Yicheng Cement makes full use of renewable energy such as photovoltaic, lithium-ion energy storage and low-temperature waste heat, and has now achieved the maximum utilization of green micro-electricity, accounting for 40.39% of the total production energy. Guidelines for the implementation of energy-saving and carbon-reducing upgrading in the
cement industry also point out that a large proportion of alternative fuel technologies should be promoted, and domestic waste, solid waste and biomass fuels should be used instead of coal to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels.
According to Huaxin Cement at the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) Leaders Summit in June this year, by the end of 2022, Huaxin had used more than 15 million tons of waste-derived alternative fuels. The average TSR (fuel substitution rate) of the company's kiln line plants reached 15.9%, much higher than the average level of 1.5% in China's cement industry. Among them, the company's most advanced Huangshi 10000-ton line plant TSR has reached more than 40%, which is the lowest carbon emission production line per unit clinker in China.
In addition to the early use of domestic waste and solid waste as alternative fuels in the cement industry, biomass fuel has the characteristics of low pollution and low cost compared with coal, and has good economic and social benefits. In 2018, Conch built the first biomass fuel system in Battambang, Cambodia, combined with the advantages of local rice scale planting, and in 2020, Conch built the first biomass alternative fuel system in China's cement industry in Zongyang.
Recently, Huarun Cement has carried out the adaptability planting experiment of space Arundo donax in Tianyang, Guangxi. Studies have shown that space Arundo donax has faster growth rate, stronger plants and higher yield per mu than ordinary Arundo donax. After harvesting, it can be used as alternative fuel through simple processing, and its combustion calorific value is 10-20% higher than that of conventional biomass, and its combustion speed is equivalent to that of bituminous coal. It is believed that in the near future, it will also open up a new way for the cement industry to optimize the energy structure! As an ideal clean energy, the application of
hydrogen energy in cement industry is still in the research and development stage, and it will take a long time for large-scale application. Fortunately, as a carrier of hydrogen energy, green ammonia fuel has been applied to Donghua Cement clinker production line with a daily output of 5000 tons as an alternative fuel for cement production.
Liangping Conch Cement is implementing the cement kiln clean energy substitution project, implementing the natural gas coupling combustion transformation of the cement kiln, including the transformation of the burner, the installation of intelligent control system, etc.; implementing the transformation of the biomass alternative fuel of the cement kiln, building a new biomass alternative fuel temporary storage, supporting crushing system, metering and conveying system, pre-combustion furnace, etc. After the completion of the project, the fuel used for cement clinker calcination will be adjusted from raw coal to raw coal + natural gas + biomass alternative fuel, the consumption of raw coal will be adjusted from 268,500 t/a to 24,600 t/a of raw coal and 99.2 million m ³/a of natural gas, and the annual comprehensive utilization of biomass alternative fuel will be 150,000 t/a. The use of raw coal dropped by 90%.
It is worth mentioning that in terms of transportation, new energy pure electric mine trucks and new energy cement tankers are gradually replacing the use of traditional diesel vehicles to support the development of new energy in the cement industry.
It is believed that with the continuous efforts of the cement industry in optimizing the energy structure, the proportion of new energy used in the cement industry will be higher and higher. To help achieve the 2025 work target required by the implementation guidelines for energy-saving and carbon-reducing transformation and upgrading of the cement industry-the energy-saving and carbon-reducing effect of the cement industry is remarkable, and the green and low-carbon development capacity is greatly enhanced.
