According to the latest data released by the Spanish REVE news network, in 2022, solar photovoltaic panel shipments in the United States increased by 10% compared with 2021, setting another annual record (reaching 31.7 million peak kilowatts [kWp]). With the growing installed capacity of solar energy, the shipment of solar photovoltaic panels in the United States is also growing.
U.S. solar panel shipments are closely tied to increased domestic solar capacity; the difference between the two is usually because of the lag time between panel shipments and installation. U.S. solar PV panel shipments include imports, exports, and domestically produced and shipped panels. In 2022, about 88% of U.S. solar panel shipments were imports from Asia. The
past decade has seen a dramatic increase in installed solar capacity in the United States, including utility-scale solar plants (with a capacity of one megawatt or more) and small-scale solar plants. Most small-scale solar is residential rooftop solar installations. The United States added 10.9 gigawatts (GW) of new utility-scale solar capacity in 2022, second only to a record 13.5 GW in 2021,
according to REVE's annual Power Generator Report. In 2022, the United States added 6.4 GW of small-scale solar capacity, an annual record and a 17% increase from the 5.5 GW added in 2021. Some new solar projects that developers had planned to open last year have been canceled or delayed until 2023
due to problems in the solar photovoltaic panel supply chain. The problems include solar panels being stranded at the US border . In 2022, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detained some solar panel imports under the relevant Xinjiang-related legislation. U.S. Customs released the detained panels after importers proved they were UFLPA-compliant, but the delay lengthened the timeline for some new solar projects. The cost of
solar panels has fallen dramatically since 2010, helping to fuel the growth of installed solar capacity in the United States and around the world. The average value of U.S. solar panel shipments (as a proxy for price) fell from $1.96 per kilowatt-hour in 2010 to $0.39 per kilowatt-hour in 2022. The average value of solar panel shipments rose 15% from 2021 on the back of rising inflation, higher material and transportation costs, and ongoing supply chain constraints.
