CCUS refers to a technology that captures and separates carbon dioxide from industrial, energy production and other emission sources or air, and uses it or transports it to a suitable site for storage, so as to avoid its direct emission into the atmosphere and ultimately achieve carbon dioxide emission reduction.
According to incomplete statistics, there are 29 CCUS projects applied in the cement industry in the world, mainly in Europe; In China, in 2018, Baimashan Cement Plant, a subsidiary of Conch Group, completed the first demonstration project of carbon capture and purification in cement kilns in the global cement industry, which undoubtedly filled a gap in low-carbon technology in the world cement industry, and China has also taken a key step in CCUS technology.
It is undeniable that the current CCUS technology is still in the demonstration stage. Although the application of CCUS technology in cement industry has great potential, there are still some difficulties to be overcome.
The first is cost. It is understood that the total investment of Conch Cement 's first cement kiln carbon capture and purification project is more than 50 million yuan. The total investment of a demonstration project of CO2 carbon capture and purification using patented external combustion kiln technology in a cement enterprise in Fujian is as high as 640 million yuan, which is obviously unacceptable to ordinary enterprises.
Secondly, CCUS technology started late, and the related technology is not mature enough, so more research and development are needed. CCUS technology includes four links of capture, transportation, utilization and storage, and there is utility consumption in each process link. At present, it is urgent to reduce costs and expand examples through technological progress to improve the feasibility and stability of the technology.
Finally, the support of policies and regulations is also an important factor to promote the application of CCUS technology in the cement industry. Only by formulating clear and perfect CCUS laws and regulations, reducing various concerns of stakeholders, ensuring the stable development of CCUS projects, and providing necessary support and incentives to encourage cement enterprises to adopt CCUS technology, can CCUS technology play a greater role in decarbonization in the cement industry.
