Zheng Jianhui: Journey to Net Zero Emission in Global Cement Market

At the meeting, Zheng Jianhui, chief analyst of Cement Big Data Research Institute of China Cement Network, brought a wonderful sharing on the theme of "Global Cement Market: Journey to Net Zero Emission". Zheng Jianhui said that in order to achieve the Paris Agreement target, the global cement industry must reduce its annual carbon emissions by at least 16% by 2030 (compared with 2019).

In 2015, the Science Based Targets initiative was jointly launched by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the United Nations Global Compact Project (UNGC). Zheng Jianhui said that in 2022, global cement carbon emissions will be about 2.7 billion tons, accounting for 7.5% of global energy-related carbon emissions. The top 12 major cement producers account for 77% of global cement production, and the task of reducing cement carbon emissions is heavy. It can be said that the cement industry is considered to be a difficult industry to reduce emissions. The 20 enterprises with the largest cement production capacity in the

world have a total production capacity of 2.6 billion tons, and China accounts for 62% of the total production capacity. Many enterprises have put forward the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Europe, India, the United States and other countries have set carbon reduction targets, China has also promoted carbon emission reduction around the carbon peak program, and many domestic cement enterprises have set carbon emission reduction targets. For example, Conch Cement plans to reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions ( clinker process) (tons of carbon dioxide/tons of clinker) by 6% in 2025 compared with 2020.
