It is undeniable that carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology is still in the demonstration stage, which is not optimistic for the cement industry facing the urgent task of carbon emission reduction. So what are the difficulties that need to be overcome in order to truly enable CCUS technology to help the cement industry achieve carbon neutrality?
CCUS refers to the capture and separation of carbon dioxide from industrial, energy production and other emission sources or air, and its utilization or transportation to suitable sites for storage, ultimately achieving carbon dioxide emission reduction. In the cement industry, Conch Group completed the first demonstration project of carbon capture and purification in the global cement industry in Baimashan Cement Plant in 2018. This undoubtedly filled a gap in the low-carbon technology of the world cement industry, but then the cement industry fell into silence in terms of CCUS until 2022. Many domestic experts have given their views on
why CCUS, a technology of great significance and promising prospects, is not progressing smoothly. Among them, the high cost and the great room for improvement of technology are the reasons that are constantly mentioned. Some experts said that the investment of CCUS projects is relatively high, and the investment of small and medium-sized carbon capture projects is about 10 million yuan/million tons of carbon dioxide per year. Although the unit investment cost decreases with the increase of scale, the total investment is rising.
"According to incomplete statistics, there are 29 CCUS in the cement industry in the world, mainly concentrated in Europe, with post-combustion capture as the main technology." Song Xinke, PhD, School of Environment, Tsinghua University, said that the domestic CCUS project technology is still in the stage of industrial demonstration, facing many challenges such as insufficient technology maturity, high economic cost, single financing channel and poor profitability.
Specifically for the cement industry, the total investment of Conch Cement 's first cement kiln carbon capture and purification project mentioned above is more than 50 million yuan. The demonstration project of CO2 carbon capture and purification in a new dry rotary kiln under construction in a cement enterprise in Fujian Province has a total investment of 640 million yuan. This is not very attractive to the cement industry, which is facing declining sales and low prices. In addition, because the cement industry has just started, the relevant technology is still immature, less experience and higher cost problems. CCUS technology includes four links: capture, transportation, utilization and storage. Each process link has utility consumption. At present, it is necessary to reduce energy consumption and consumption through technological progress and comprehensive utilization of energy, so as to reduce costs.
Other scholars have pointed out that China needs to further establish and improve the CCUS regulations and standards system. In the practice of domestic CCUS projects, there are some problems to be solved urgently, such as unclear ownership, unclear jurisdiction and approval procedures, and lack of relevant technical specifications. It is necessary to formulate clear and perfect CCUS laws and regulations to reduce the concerns of stakeholders and ensure the steady development of CCUS projects. 24-25 April
2023, China Cement Network will hold the " China Cement Industry Green Development Summit Forum and Ultra-clean Emission Technology Exchange Conference " and the " Fourth China Cement Intelligent Summit Forum " in Changsha, Hunan Province. Song Xinke, as a special guest, will make a wonderful speech at the meeting! After the meeting, we will visit Sinoma Zhuzhou Cement Co., Ltd. and the first set of international "one-box SCR denitrification project of dust and nitrate".
