(Xinhua) European Commission President von der Leyen said in a statement on the evening of the 27th that the European Union has decided to close its airspace to Russia as a whole.
Von der Leyen said that the European Union decided to expand the scope of sanctions against Russia on the 27th. One is to prohibit any aircraft belonging to Russia, registered in Russia, leased or actually controlled by Russian institutions or individuals from taking off, landing or crossing in EU airspace. The
second is to take control measures to prohibit the landing and dissemination of news and information products of Russian state media Russia Today and Sputnik News Agency in the EU. The
third is to impose new sanctions on the Belarusian government, including banning its exports of tobacco, timber, cement, steel and other products to the European Union, and sanctioning Belarusians who assist Russia in fighting.
In addition, the EU held an informal foreign ministers' meeting that evening and decided to provide Ukraine with 450 million euros for the purchase of lethal weapons and 50 million euros for the purchase of non-lethal supplies such as fuel and defense equipment. Von der Leyen said that this is the first time in the history of the European Union to provide weapons assistance to a country under external attack.
Earlier, the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency announced that it would close its airspace to airlines from the three Baltic countries, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, Poland, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.
