2022, FLSmidth, a Danish Smith Group, announced that The "CO2 Valorize Alliance" (temporarily translated into Chinese as "CO2 Steady-Zero Alliance") funded by the European Commission was formally established and put into operation. The members of the alliance are composed of 20 professional R & D teams from famous cement science and technology institutions in Denmark, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and other countries, world-class universities, top cement enterprises and suppliers of complete sets of technical equipment, with more than 10 world-class experts in cement, environment, physics, chemistry, industrial engineering and economic analysis. Burein Temel McKenna, Head of Green Cement Solutions Development, Smiths, is responsible for the overall operation and coordination. The purpose of the
alliance is to immediately curb and stabilize the total carbon dioxide emissions of the cement industry and the carbon dioxide emissions per unit of cement; In the next 20 years (or before 2045), the two indicators of carbon dioxide emissions will be steadily reduced to zero. On the premise of meeting the demand for cement in construction projects with quality and quantity guaranteed, we will rely on scientific and technological development and innovation to steadily transform and successfully achieve carbon neutrality. The key work direction and content of the
alliance are in addition to the highly agreed zero fossil fuel and further energy conservation and emission reduction as far as possible. There are three main directions and fields:
the first is to develop, popularize and apply low clinker content cement LCC with clinker coefficient below CF0.60 (the author's note: including 32.5 cement).
The second is to develop and apply "green low-carbon cementitious materials SCMs" made from non-carbonate-based and non-calcium-based resources.
The third is to develop and improve the technology of carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage CCU/S, and strive to achieve that the utilization of carbon dioxide is greater than required storage CCU & CCS.
This is a world-class alliance guided by the overall concept of sustainable development of MissionZero (Journey to Zero) put forward by Smith Group in 2019. This alliance will overcome various technical and economic difficulties in the division of labor and cooperation of complementary advantages of each member team, efficiently optimize sub-topics and sub-steps, specially study and formulate general or personalized comprehensive solutions, provide a full set of technical services for cement enterprises, and guide and promote the cement industry to enter a new era of green zero carbon as soon as possible.
"CO2 Steady-Zero Alliance" began to recruit 8 doctoral students every year in 2023 to train senior professionals for the whole society.
Wish "CO2 Steady-Zero Alliance" pioneering and innovative, more achievements, more talents, and make new contributions to the successful realization of carbon neutrality in the cement industry!
