According to foreign media reports, due to environmental factors, the Vietnamese government wants to close its largest iron ore mine in Southeast Asia. Vietnam's central provincial government has asked Ha Tinh province to shut down the Thach Khe iron ore mining project until 2070. Tran Viet Ha, director of the Planning and Investment Department of
Ha Tinh Province, said that a report had been sent to the Planning and Investment Department and that it was planned to be terminated by May 2021. According to the province's 2021-2030 development plan, the project will be closed at least until 2070, and the direction of land use will be shifted to ecotourism, urban centers, high-tech agricultural production areas and other work.
It is reported that Thach Khe was discovered in 1960 and is now the largest iron ore mine in Southeast Asia, with an estimated reserve of 544 million tons.
